How Much Water Storage Do I Need?

The average Australian uses around 120,000 litres of water per year. However, this figure is largely based on suburban usage, where water is heavily used for irrigation and toilet flushing.

In rural and semi-rural settings, water consumption is often much lower. As a general guide, Pioneer estimates that approximately 30,000 litres of water storage per person is sufficient for households relying on rainwater.

It’s important to remember that your water needs will also depend on factors such as annual rainfall and the size of your roof catchment area, which both directly affect how much water you can collect and store.

Are Steel Water Tanks More Expensive Than Poly Tanks?

​Poly tanks are commonly manufactured in sizes up to 50,000 litres, which may be suitable for smaller households, but can be limiting for larger homes or properties relying entirely on rainwater.

Pioneer offers a wide range of steel water tanks from 12,200 litres up to 500,000 litres, with custom solutions available for larger commercial and industrial applications.

While upfront costs may vary, steel tanks often become more cost-effective as storage capacity increases, making them a smart long-term investment for properties requiring higher water volumes.

How Much Space Will I Need for My Water Tank?

​​The space required will depend on the size of the tank you choose. As a general rule, allow for an area at least 2.5 metres wider than the diameter of your tank.

This additional space ensures:

  • Adequate room for the required sand pad

  • A minimum clearance of 1 metre around the tank

  • Easier and safer installation

Are Your Tanks Suitable for Irrigation Purposes?

Yes. Our water tanks are designed and built for a wide range of applications, including irrigation. They are engineered to handle the demands and rigours of agricultural and irrigation use.

Do You Offer Tanks for Farm Homes?

​Absolutely. We supply water tanks suitable for homes on farms, including setups designed to collect and store rainwater harvested from roof catchment systems.

What Setup Do You Recommend for an Irrigation Tank?

​​If you are filling your tank from a dam or bore, we recommend installing the inlet at the bottom of the tank wall wherever possible.

While this may seem unusual, bottom inlets provide superior tank performance. For roof-harvested rainwater, we recommend a standard system fitted with a roof lead and filter basket.

Why Is a Bottom Inlet Beneficial?

​​Top inlets can create wave motion as water enters the tank, which may cause splashing and unnecessary disturbance inside the tank.

A bottom inlet allows water to enter below the surface, eliminating splash and reducing movement. This results in a more stable and efficient system overall.

What Should I Consider with a Bottom Inlet System?

With a bottom inlet, water is pushed directly into the existing volume of stored water. This means water levels rise and fall smoothly without agitation.

You might expect internal pressure to push back against the inlet, but this is simply a matter of head pressure:

  • A 1-metre water level creates 1 metre of head pressure

  • A 2-metre level creates 2 metres of head pressure

This is a normal and manageable part of tank operation and does not negatively impact performance when installed correctly.

Do You Provide Gutter Systems?

No. In over 30 years of experience, we have found that very few properties lack sufficient roof area to effectively harvest rainwater.

BUSHFIRE PROTECTION

Bushfire Protection Water Tanks

Pioneer Water Tanks are purpose-built to help protect your home and property during bushfire events. Constructed from Australian-made, non-combustible BlueScope® steel, they are engineered to withstand extreme heat and provide a reliable water source when it matters most.

Are Pioneer Water Tanks Bushfire Proof?

Pioneer Water Tanks are designed to perform in harsh fire conditions. The steel tank structure provides excellent resistance to direct flame exposure during a passing bushfire front. While Zincalume® and COLORBOND® panels may experience accelerated wear or degradation after intense exposure, the key advantage is that the tank maintains its structural integrity and continues to hold water.

In extreme heat, the internal liner may melt down to the level of the stored water. However, the water remains contained and accessible for firefighting and livestock use. In many cases, tanks remain functional for months following a fire event, providing critical water when it is needed most.

Independently Tested Performance

Pioneer Water Tanks have been independently assessed by the CSIRO in partnership with the Bushfire CRC, undergoing extensive bushfire simulations and performance testing. These assessments confirm their ability to withstand fire conditions and continue storing water when other tank types may fail.

Water Quality After a Fire

Following a bushfire, tank water should not be used for human consumption due to potential contamination from ash, debris, and melted liner material above the waterline.

However, the remaining water is generally suitable in the short term for firefighting and livestock watering, which is often critical immediately after a fire has passed.

Repair & Recovery

Pioneer tanks are designed with a modular structure, allowing damaged panels to be replaced and liners to be repaired or fully replaced if required. If only part of the tank has been exposed to fire, repairs can often be targeted and cost-effective.

Your local South Coast Water Tanks team can assess the condition of your tank, recommend the most suitable course of action, and carry out repairs to return it to full service.

Steel vs Poly Tanks in Bushfires

Unlike steel tanks, poly tanks are made from petroleum-based materials that soften under extreme heat. This can lead to structural failure, complete water loss, and in some cases, ignition that contributes to fire spread.

Steel water tanks offer a far more reliable and safer solution during bushfires, ensuring that water remains available for emergency use.

What To Do After a Fire Event

If your tank has been exposed to fire, avoid drinking the water as it may be contaminated. You should contact your insurance provider if applicable and arrange a professional inspection through Pioneer or your local South Coast Water Tanks dealer.

A thorough assessment will determine whether repair or replacement is required, and a plan can be put in place to restore your water storage as quickly as possible.

Important Considerations

Fire damage isn’t always immediately visible, and extreme heat can affect both coatings and structural integrity. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that all fire-affected tanks are professionally assessed.

In severe cases, a tank may be deemed beyond cost-effective repair and replacement may be recommended to ensure safety and long-term reliability. If a customer chooses to proceed with repairs instead, a Fire Waiver is required. This allows repairs to go ahead at the owner’s discretion and liability, noting that the tank will no longer be covered under Pioneer’s warranty.
